At the heart of the Waldorf approach is recognition of the spiritual nature of the human being. Children are encouraged to remain open to the interconnection of life, and the entire education is crafted to support them in their growth as globally aware and socially responsible individuals. Prairie Moon Waldorf School in Lawrence, Kansas, offers early childhood and grade school education from preschool through eighth grade. Fully engaged through head, heart and hands, Waldorf students cultivate a life-long love of learning and a capacity to be confident individuals.
Founded in 2001, the Waldorf Association of Lawrence opened Prairie Moon Waldorf School in 2005. Since 2005, Prairie Moon Waldorf School has been offering an approach to education that develops a sense of social responsibility as well the skills that teach children how to learn. Since 2005, Prairie Moon Waldorf School has been a Developing Member of the Association of Waldorf Schools of North America (AWSNA) and the Waldorf Early Childhood Association of North America (WECAN), Prairie Moon Waldorf School is operated by the Waldorf Association of Lawrence, a 501 (c) (3) not-for-profit educational organization registered in Kansas.
The Waldorf pedagogy integrates literature, movement, theatre, and the visual and musical arts with a rigorous academic study of science, math, world languages, history, and geography. There are over 1000 Waldorf schools worldwide that are dedicated to recognizing the unique spirit of each child. Through a rich curriculum that integrates the academic, artistic and practical, Prairie Moon Waldorf School fosters the development of self-knowledge and helps children to engage fully in the world by awakening in them warmth of heart, clarity of thought, and strength of purpose. With an enduring 100-year history and a bright future, the international Waldorf school movement is the largest and fastest growing non-sectarian school movement in the world.
Prairie Moon Waldorf School’s Grades Campus occupies seven beautiful acres that include a garden, green house and an expansive play area on the prairie. Our Early Childhood Center occupies 6 1/2 acres of woods and meadows less than a mile away. Grounded in a profound understanding of human development, Prairie Moon Waldorf School is the only Waldorf school in Kansas. Prairie Moon is connected to the worldwide Waldorf Education movement and offers Waldorf teacher preparation courses in the region at different times of the year. In 2011, Prairie Moon Waldorf School was awarded one of three inaugural Kansas Green School Awards by the Kansas Association for Conservation & Environment Education.
