Businesses and Individuals that have helped Prairie Moon School

Words cannot truly express our gratitude for businesses and individuals that are helping our school become a reality, in this first year. They become part of the greater whole of the school - and friends of the school for its lifetime, as they help to set the foundation. We wanted to share a bit about these businesses and people.

But before we share details about key businesses and people, we have to thank our parent community. Our parent community has done a tremendous amount of work for the school, and has committed to the school this first year - as pioneers of this school. Not every school begins with such a dedicated group of parents. It is a true gift to the future life of the school.

TREANOR ARCHITECTS in Lawrence, KS
In Spring of 2005, we needed some site plans re-done for the KS Dept. of Education, the fire marshall's office, and the city, county zoning and planning offices. The amount that an architect would charge would have wiped out any savings that our school had raised through our Fall Fair's fundraising event. Therefore, one of our advisors, Vicki Douglas, set out to help us find an architect would might be willing to donate these services. We were extremely fortunate to find an architect at TREANOR ARCHITECTS to do the necessary work. Not only did they donate their services, but the amount of time it took was extraordinarily speedy. We are ever so grateful to them.

INTERIOR TRIM SPECIALTIES, Lawrence, KS: 785-766-8466
Interior Trim Specialties has donated a seemingly endless amount of wood, miscellaneous supplies, valuable knowledge, time and labor toward the creation and beautification of our classroom and the outdoor play space. In addition, their craftsmanship is impeccable and the beauty of the designs they are creating is a work of art in and of itself. You'll soon be able to take a look, once the classroom is completed, and we have pictures online, or stop by during one of our public events. For anyone interested in having any custom woodwork completed for their home or business, we do not think that their craftsmanship and integrity can be matched! Have a look at their work and we think you'll agree.

ANONYMOUS DONATION
We received an anonymous gift of nearly $5,500 in July 2005 - just in time for the numerous expenses that we had given the renovation of the classroom. This person did not earmark it for anything specific, and said to use it as needed. This gift could not have come at a more important time in our school's life. We so appreciate this donor's willingness to share this with us.

PARADIGM DESIGN, Lawrence, KS
Michael Almon, owner of Paradigm Design, has generously consulted and supplied our school with the wonderful products which will protect many of the classroom wooden toys and custom cabinerty and furniture that our Parent Community has made (or were donated by Interior Trim Specialties, above), in addition to providing the water filtration system which will provide the drinking and cooking water for those in the school. If you need a resource to find building or home repair products which are gentle on the Earth, Paradigm Design is a must for you! (contact information: 785-840-0313 or paradigm@idir.net)

WALT BABBIT ELECTRIC
Walt made a donation of some of his labor toward the installment of the smoke detectors which were necessary to bring our building up to fire code, as well as replacing emergency lighting throughout the building, and installing some new dedicated electrical circuits in the classroom.

WATERSPHERE PLUMBING, Lawrence, KS
Daniel Poole, owner of Watersphere Plumbing, donated his labor to help get the plumbing issues with the building up to snuff. He helped fix numerous toilets whcih were not working, helped us correct some code issues, and installed a hot water heater in the classroom and a water filter for the students and staff to use.

COTTIN'S TRUE VALUE HARDWARE STORE, Lawrence, KS
Linda and Tom Cottin have helped our school out numerous times by having much needed rental items to make our modifications to the school building go smoothly. From donating the auger we used to dig all of our nearly 60 fence post holes in a single day, to giving us great deals on other rentals and general hardware supplies (and even donating a lot of hardware tie-on aprons for the children to help with the work!), we believe that there are no nicer, or more knowledgable, folks in town in the hardware business.

GRANT TOWNSHIP BOARD
The folks who comprise the Grant Township Board, headed up by the Grant Township Trustee, Chet Fitch, have been very supportive of our school ever since Grant Township approached us in Summer of 2004 to consider renting their space. Chet, Rich and Randy have consistently supported our ideas to transform the parts of the building that we will call our school, and helped provide supporting documentation on behalf of our school as we moved through the processes of obtaining a Change of Use Permit.

SCOTT MCLEWIN, Overland Park, KS
Scott, a former Waldorf student who completed K-12 at the Green Meadows Waldorf School in Spring Valley, NY, is a computer whiz who took over our website near the end of 2004 and has made much of the functionality that we now enjoy possible. Building on the website that one of the founding members of the Waldorf Association of Lawrence, Marty Haught, set up in 2001, Scott has donated his time, expertise, and humor to creating a website that is easy for us 'amateur webmasters' to maintain. Scott, actually, does all of the maintenance while others are able to write and post the content. Thanks, Scott!!

JOY'S WALDORF DOLLS, Bothell, WA
Joy Chambers, owner of Joy's Waldorf Dolls, donated her time and expertise to come to Lawrence in August to teach a group of dedicated parents and other interested individuals in the fine art of doll making. A professional doll maker for well over a decade, Joy's work has received international acclaim. Her willingness to come to Prairie Moon School and teach her craft to our group will hopefully provide the critical mass of doll makers to our school to help us reach our annual fundraising goals which, in large part, will be accomplished though the dolls and toys that our 'Prairie Moon Handiworkers' will make for sale thorughout the year.

We will be including more businesses and people soon...
